The King and Queen of Spain Visit the Area Affected by the Volcano Eruption in La Palma
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia talk to people evacuated by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, who are staying at the El Fuerte barracks (Breña Baja), on 23 September, 2021 in La Palma, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The King and Queen of Spain travelled to the island of La Palma on Thursday to take an interest in the situation of the thousands of people affected by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. They also expressed their gratitude to the troops who are taking part in the emergency and evacuation work. The lava coming out of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in El Paso (La Palma) has covered a total of 166 hectares since the eruption began on Sunday 19 September and has already destroyed 350 buildings, according to satellite monitoring by the European Union's Copernicus programme. This situation has led to the eviction of at least 6,000 people from their homes.
